UNREAL - GAME - SOLO

Backrooms: Descent

Overview

Backrooms: Descent Prototype is a short, immersive horror-action experience built in Unreal Engine 5. Inspired by the eerie mythos of the Backrooms, the game challenges players to survive and escape a surreal, procedurally eerie space populated by unsettling entities and shifting environments.

This was my first project using Unreal Engine, where I explored core systems including AI behavior, dynamic environments, and physics-driven interaction.

Outcome

This project was a huge learning experience and a great introduction to Unreal Engine’s powerful toolset. It laid the foundation for my understanding of blueprint scripting, AI Behaviour trees and perception, and performance optimization. I’m incredibly proud of how much I achieved solo and look forward to building more advanced projects in the future.

Key Features

  • AI-Driven Enemies using perception systems, pathfinding, and NavMeshModifierVolumes to simulate intelligent and unpredictable movement.

  • Physics-Based Interactions, including hanging lost scientists, gravity flips and niagara fluid simulation.

  • Environmental Storytelling through collectible notes and a world that responds to player actions.

  • Dynamic Materials & Colliders, used to enhance gameplay realism with unique audio/visual responses to surfaces.

  • Performant lighting: Baked lighting using static lights, reflection probes and a lightmass importance volume.
